SP

Siriporn P.

Bangkok · Retired teacher

I joined Planting the First Seeds after my husband kept saying I should learn more about our savings. I was not sure what to expect and felt a little nervous about being in a group. By the second session that feeling had gone. The pace was genuinely gentle — nothing rushed. I now track our monthly outgoings properly for the first time in my life, which at 58 feels both embarrassing and rather satisfying to admit.

Tending the Plan was the right level for me. I already understood basic budgeting but had never seriously looked at deposit accounts or fund options. What I appreciated most was the lack of sales pressure — nobody at any point suggested I should open a specific account or buy a product. The planning journal was something I actually continued using after the six weeks. The commute to Silom is a bit long from my side, but worth it.

Wilaiporn L.

Bangkok · Government employee

I completed all three programmes over about eighteen months. The Mature Garden was the most challenging, which makes sense — retirement planning involves a lot of moving parts. But the facilitator was very clear that anything involving specific products or investment decisions needed a licensed professional. That honesty was refreshing. I now have a proper plan document I can take to my bank and actually discuss intelligently.

Pracha C.

Samut Prakan · Healthcare worker

My sister recommended this after she did Planting the First Seeds. I joined Tending the Plan and found the format suited me — short talks, worksheets, discussion. The group was about eight people and that felt right. Everyone was roughly the same age and had similar concerns, which made the conversation easy. The recorded lessons were useful because I could replay parts I had not quite followed.

Bangkok · Freelance designer

As a freelancer, my income is irregular and I have always found money stressful. I expected Planting the First Seeds to be basic and it was — but in a genuinely useful way. The starter guide covered irregular income specifically, which surprised me. I had tried YouTube videos and they always assumed a stable salary. This was different and felt relevant to my actual situation. Would have liked one more session, honestly.

The Mature Garden Programme was eleven weeks and it needed to be. Covering pensions, provident funds, healthcare costs, and family planning properly takes time. I appreciated that the facilitator never rushed. The session on healthcare costs alone was worth the whole fee — I had simply not thought carefully about what care might cost in my sixties. The planning folder I produced is now something I review every three months.

Case Studies

Three journeys through the programme stages.

These are composites drawn from real participant experiences, shared with permission.

JT

Jiraporn, 52 — Primary school teacher

Planting the First Seeds · 3 weeks

The challenge

Jiraporn had never tracked her spending and felt vague anxiety about whether her teacher's salary was covering her actual needs. She had savings but did not know how much or whether they were growing.

What she did

She joined Planting the First Seeds. Over three sessions, she built a simple income-and-outgoings picture for the first time and learned how to set up a separate savings account she would not touch.

What changed

Within six weeks of finishing the programme, she had a clear monthly picture and ฿3,200 set aside that she had not planned for before. Her words: "I stopped feeling embarrassed and started feeling organised."

BS

Boonsong, 46 — Small shop owner

Tending the Plan · 6 weeks

The challenge

Boonsong had been putting money aside each month but kept it all in a standard account. He had heard about fixed deposits and savings funds but did not understand how they worked or which would suit him.

What he did

He joined Tending the Plan and worked through the sessions on deposit options and fund basics. He completed the planning journal carefully and used the midway check-in to ask specific questions about his situation.

What changed

After the programme, he consulted his bank with clear questions and moved a portion of his savings into a fixed deposit account. He reported feeling "much less uncertain" about where his money was sitting and why.

CW

Chanida, 55 — Civil servant

All three programmes · 20 weeks total

The challenge

Chanida was five years from her planned retirement age and felt she had not prepared carefully enough. She had a provident fund but did not fully understand it, and had not thought concretely about healthcare costs.

What she did

She completed all three programmes over about eighteen months, starting from the introductory level. The Mature Garden Programme gave her a structured way to think about the years ahead, session by session.

What changed

She finished with a detailed planning folder and, for the first time, a scheduled appointment with a licensed financial planner — which she felt ready to attend. "I went in with actual questions, not just worry."
